Org. Setting and Reporting                

The internship is located in the Planning, Design and Construction Section (PDCS) of the Facilities Management Service (FMS), Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD) of the Office of Central Support Services (OCSS) in the Department of Management (DM). The role of FMS is to examine and report on a wide range of building use, facility management matters, Member State Artwork Gifts and work space accommodations within the United Nations in New York. FMS continues to monitor the UN complex and update floor plans where necessary. Gift management requires record keeping for over 300 gifts, location placement, document references and condition assessment recording. The duration of the internship is a minimum of two (2) months to a maximum of six (6) months depending on the particular needs of the receiving programme. This Facilities Management Service internship is for two (2) months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Office.The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday-Friday) under the supervision of the Chief of PDCS and/ or a staff member in the Section to which they are assigned. Responsibilities               

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and needs of assignments within the Section, the interns assigned within the work team, as well as the internship period. Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Planning, Design and Construction Section (PDCS) and within delegated authority, the intern will assist in some of the following duties: •Assist in administrative related work, • Assist in filing and archiving documents related to the Gifts, •Assist in creating inventory of documentation in Excel,  •Assist in drafting letters and other communications as required, •Perform other related duties as required.

Education                

To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period of graduation. 2. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications, including MS Suite (Word, Excel). 3. Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations. 4. Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.                

Work Experience                

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.                

Languages                

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
