Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This post is located in Ecosystem Division at the Nairobi Duty station under the supervision of the Head of the Ecosystem Services Economics Unit (and current TEEB Coordinator) and oversight of the Chief of the Branch Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Responsibilities

• Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources.

• Assist in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies. Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.

• Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services project which is jointly implemented by UN Environment and UN Statistical Division; monitors and analyzes project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.

• Provide substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.

• Undertake outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; make presentations on assigned topics/activities.

• Participate in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.

• Coordinate activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepare related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).

• Perform other duties as required.

Competencies

• PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to natural capital accounting and valuation of ecosystem services project and to the System of Environmental Economic Accounting Experimental Ecosystem Accounting. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of problems. Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities. Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate, or equivalent) in economics, environmental management, environmental science, programme management or related fields is required. A first-level or higher degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree) in other fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Training with focus on ecosystem service valuation and biophysical modelling is an added advantage.

Work Experience

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of ecosystem service valuation or a related area and of project/programme management is required. Work experience at both the national and the intergovernmental level, working experience in developing countries is desirable. Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.

Languages

English and French are the working knowledge of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
