Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

 

The UN Environment Crisis Management Branch has been active in the area of Environmental Security and Sustaining Peace since 2008 through a programme called Environmental Cooperation for Peacebuilding. MapX was developed by UN Environment, the World Bank and GRID-Geneva to capitalize on the use of new digital technologies and cloud computing in the sustainable management of natural resources and in the mapping of environmental security risks. One of the founding principles was to equalize information held by different stakeholders as a prerequisite to better dialogue, decision making and prioritization of action. MapX evolved from an initial focus on extra active resources to include a range of different resource types and themes.

 

The UN Environment Internship on MapX Geospatial Data Management and Analysis is for four (4) months.

 

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

 

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

 

Under the Head of the Environmental Cooperation for Peacebuilding programme the intern will:

 

- Identify global, regional and national environmental data sets to be hosted or streamed in MapX;

- Help clients upload and style data in MapX;

- Conduct basis geospatial analysis using QGIS and MapX;

- Help identify user needs, use cases and front end applications for MapX;

- Develop story maps using live MapX data;

- Identify news, events and articles that could be featured in MapX monthly newsletter;

- Perform any other task assigned by the Head of the Environmental Cooperation for Peacebuilding programme.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

 

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal ideals commitment to the of the Charter;

 

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

 

Studies in the field of law, public policy or governance; Geographic information systems and remote sensing are preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish and French is desirable.
