Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Management, Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC).

Responsibilities

Selected intern will work under the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Management. The intern will be expected to perform various activities in the area of human resources management and general office administration: (1) Provide assistance to the Administrative Officer on a whole range of human resources activities in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General, including recruitment, contract extension, designation, terminations, disciplinary measures, ensuring consistency in the application of United Nations rules and procedures; (2) maintain up-to-date internal paper and electronic files related the human resources issues; keep track of the new developments and follow-up actions, and ensure that the electronic databases are continually updated to reflect such changes; (3) provide support in organizing consultative meetings and special events, assist in preparation of background material and logistical arrangements; (4) provide research on various issues related to human resources and administration and summarize data for future reference; (5) perform other duties as required.

Competencies

Professionalism: Ability to research, select, organize and summarize data and information required for reports, studies, briefings, etc.; Tact and discretion in dealing with confidential matters; Ability to accurately and independently prepare the full range of outputs, reports, etc.; Demonstrated ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given; Excellent administrative skills including drafting ability and familiarization with word processing techniques.

 

Communication:Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; Listens to others,correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication.

 

Planning & Organizing: Identifies priority activities and assignments, adjusts priorities as required; Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; Uses time efficiently.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

 

Candidates should be experienced with standard software applications such as Word, Excel and Power Point and have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, as well as a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency (both oral and written) in English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable.
